Spiritual & emotional health

Spiritual formation, soul care, spiritual disciplines, spiritual & emotional health, life-giving habits - whatever you may call it, we are here to help and support you as you desire to become more and more like Jesus.

It’s so important to us that it’s one of our BIG three priorities for this coming year.

Go deeper

We have some brilliant courses and tools which are a great way to explore particular aspects of your soul health at a deeper level, usually with a group of others who are also wanting to pursue spiritual health. We have three options run by people at Severn Vineyard, which can all be completed through an online community.

This should hopefully mean there will be one that suits the stage you are at as well as your lifestyle of work and play! For further information on The Gold, The SHAPE of you or Emotionally Focused, get in touch with liz.nixon@severnvineyard.org.

Podcast

Our podcast “Well With My Soul” is all about spiritual and emotional health, what these mean to us and how they link to each other and our other kinds of healthiness to help us face every challenge we meet in life.

We have been covering a topic every week, sometimes with a talk from Owen Lynch, Severn Vineyard's co-lead pastor, and other weeks with a panel discussing how it's working out in our lives, or maybe not! What are finding difficult, or what do we have questions about?

If you have questions or want to grow in this with us, we hope you'll subscribe and get our free episodes every Friday morning.

Books

People have been writing about the practice of spiritual disciplines for decades (and centuries!), so there are plenty of books out there to choose from! Have a look at the titles below for some inspiration!
You could gather together with some friends and read a chapter a week and meet to discuss your thoughts. You may wish to take more time to process and evaluate a book, so why not slow down and read and re-read only one chapter over the course of 6-8 weeks.
Finally, do let us know if you’ve read a great book - we’d love to be able to recommend it to others!

Boxset Binge The Bible

God’s word is amazing. It comes in lots of shapes and sizes, from epic stories to pithy poems, looking at life and its meaning through the eyes of the royal and the rescued, powerful leaders with tragic flaws, suffering servants and songwriters, ordinary people given glimpses of eternity, and many like us who were just trying to make sense of it all.

The Bible is more than a book - it’s a library, and while that means there’s something for everyone to dip into, it’s also very hard to imagine ourselves sitting down to read the whole thing.

So we’re putting resources together here to help. The Bible can be incredibly inspiring and rewarding to explore, and might not be as daunting as you think. Follow our tips and guides, and we can enjoy it together!

Prayer Cards

We've got three sets of prayer cards that you can use in your prayer times, available from our Information Desk. They are brilliant and simple, guiding you through structured prayers or reflection time to enable you to go deeper. They are:

  • Lectio Divina

  • Centering Prayer

  • The Examen

We’ve got some examples of Lectio Divina in our Bible meditation videos and podcasts, and you can use the structure to approach any passage you like in the Bible.

There’s a good example of Centering Prayer at the end of this talk.

If you would like a set of prayer cards, email Liz.Nixon@severnvineyard.org and we’ll post them to you!
